(1) [The Eighteen Disciples of Buddha].
Finished in A.B. 1615. Hanging scroll. Color and ink on silk. A
complete set of 18 paintings. Size: 40.5 cm / 66.5 cm original painting
before mounted. Well preserved and mounted according to the traditional
Chinese painting.
The painter: Ding Yun Peng (A.D.1547-1628), A famous painting master
in Ming Dynasty (A.D.1368-1644). His pen-name is Nan Yu; his surname is
the Resident in Hole China. Born in Xiu Ning (now in An Hui Province).
He was skilled in painting figures and Buddha images. He learned his line
drawing from another master Li Gong Ling and coloring from Qian Xuan. He
was especially distinguished for his line drawing. A book titled [The Appraisal
of Paintings by Who Living Quietly in the Mountains] has the following
comment on his painting: "The images of his paintings are valiant
and vivid and his drawing lines are natural and magnificent." Some
of his paintings are preserved in Palace Museum, China Arts Museum, Shanghai
Museum in P.R.C., National Palace Museum in Taiwan and Nelson Art Gallery
in U.S.A.
This complete set of paintings are the quintessence of his fine masterpiece
handed down through ages, finished in the late part of his life.
